Rainbow Trout Feeding on Midge Pupa
March 16th, 2008
A school of rainbow trout sit just under the surface in a large pool, chasing midge pupa as they ascend through the water column towards the surface. A good technique to try in this case would be to tie on a Griffith's Gnat, then tie on a small Zebra Midge 18" off the bend of the hook. Watch for the Griffith's Gnat to disappear when trout take the Zebra Midge subsurface.

Rainbow Trout Sipping Midges

A school of rainbow trout sit in a side eddy of a main run and sip midges in the afternoon. The trout can be very difficult to spot, especially from a distance. I counted at least 40 rises in this short video.

Mountain Lake Cutthroat Trout

A small cutthroat trout cruises the shallows of a mountain lake in search of food. It is interesting to see the fish take a bite of material on the lake bottom, taste it, and spit out the non-food items.

Slack Water Rainbow Trout

A large rainbow trout leisurely sips insects in a small slack water pool next to a run. The video was taken in early afternoon on an overcast day. I briefly had the fish on a size 20 Griffith's Gnat.
